Konstantin Rokossovsky's life was closely connected with Poland – although sometimes in a very unexpected way.
His father, Xavier Rokossovsky, was an impoverished Polish nobleman – already the grandfather of the future marshal, Vincent, had neither land nor even a personal estate. But if Vincent Rokossovsky joined the Polish rebels in 1863, for which he spent several months in prison in the Warsaw citadel, his son was a loyal subject of the Russian Empire.
He worked on the railroad, married Antonina Ovsyannikova, a teacher from Pinsk, and their children, Konstantin, Maria and Helena, were baptized into Orthodoxy.
