          Biography of Masaoka Shiki

          Masaoka Shiki was a Japanese poet, writer, literary critic, and theorist of Meiji-era poetry.

          He was a great poet of Japan's "Silver Age" and was known as the "last patriarch of haiku." He lived a brief but vibrant life, during which he saved traditional Japanese poetry genres, such as tanka and haiku, from extinction.

          Early Life and Education

          Masaoka Shiki, born as Masaoka Tsunenori, was born on September 17, 1867, in Matsuyama, Iyo Province, in a modest family of retired samurai.

          At the age of eight, while attending a local school affiliated with a shrine, Masaoka made the decision to become a philologist. By the age of twelve, he began writing his first poems and prose.

          In 1883, Masaoka completed hi
