          Birth and Early Life

Malintzin (1496-1505) was a Nahua woman whose life and legacy would forever be intertwined with the fate of Mexico.

Born as Malinali or Malinal, her father's untimely demise forced her mother to remarry and give birth to a son. Malintzin, now deemed expendable, was sold to Mayan slave traders and taken to the trading hub of Xicalango.

          Arrival with the Spaniards

In 1519, Malintzin became one of 20 enslaved women gifted to Spanish conquistador Hernán Cortés.

Bernal Díaz del Castillo, a Spanish chronicler, described her as beautiful and compassionate, standing out among the other captives.
